Origin

The Rijnlands Lyceum foundation was founded in 1936 by a group of Leiden university professors. They were dissatisfied with the quality of education on offer in the area and decided to establish a modern non-denominational school for their children: Rijnlands Lyceum Wassenaar.

The initiative was successful. Apart from the original establishment in Wassenaar, new schools were set up in Oegstgeest (1956) and Sassenheim (1972). The International School of The Hague was added in 1991. Rijnlands has also provided education abroad in Dutch since 1984. On 1 August 2011 The Eerste Nederlandse Montessori School (1916), a regular Dutch primary school in The Hague, joined the foundation. On 1 August 2012 the European School of the Hague Rijnlands Lyceum will open its doors.

The schools that are united within the foundation are still committed to the objective set seventy years ago: to provide high-quality education for people who desire more than the standard offering. The international dimension has been added as one of its distinguishing features. The schools actively promote international mindedness as one of their values.
