What is a European School?

European schools were founded in 1953 for the children of members and officials of European institutions, bodies and agencies. At this moment there are 14 traditional European Schools (type 1) and 5 Accredited schools for European Schooling (type 2) in Europe. A type 1 school is financed entirely by the European Union. A type 2 school is part of the national education system. The school fees for the children of European officials are paid by the European Union.

The European School of The Hague Rijnlands Lyceum will be an Accredited School (type 2).

When will the European School of The Hague Rijnlands Lyceum start?

The European School of The Hague Rijnlands Lyceum will start on 20 August 2012 with the first two years of Nursery education (4 and 5-year olds) and the first two years of  Primary education (children aged 6 and 7). In September 2013 year 3, 4 and 5 of primary will start. The Secondary School will start in 2014 with the first three junior years.

What languages will the school offer?

At the outset the school will work with three “language sections”: Dutch, English and Spanish, possibly also Italian. In principle the entire programme in the Nursery and Primary School will be offered in Dutch, English and Spanish. Children whose mother tongue is not Dutch or Spanish will be taught in English. From the first class in Primary School onwards French, German or English is an obligatory first foreign language. Additionally there is a focus on mother-tongue tuition and English as an Additional Language. From the third year of Primary onwards pupils will get acquainted with various languages in the so-called European Hours, which are offered in mixed-language groups. In Secondary Education a second foreign language is mandatory in addition to the first foreign language. A third or fourth language may be chosen besides Latin or Greek. A number of subjects are taught in the first foreign language. This rich diversity of European languages and cultures is a typical feature of European education, together with the special emphasis on mother-tongue education and culture.

What is the European Baccalaureate?

The European Baccalaureate is the diploma issued by the Board of Governors of the European Schools in Brussels. This diploma is recognized by all European member states and qualifies the student for university entrance in any European country as if it were a national diploma. The European Baccalaureate is also recognized outside the European Union.

Who supervises the quality of the school?

The quality of the school is supervised by the Dutch Education Inspectorate and the Inspectorate of the European schools. The latter will do so through periodic quality audits necessary for the school’s continued accreditation.

Who can be admitted to the school?

Admission to the European School of The Hague Rijnlands Lyceum will be regulated strictly. See the general admissions criteria of the European schools and, based on that, the specific admissions criteria in English, French and German governing the  European School of The Hague Rijnlands Lyceum. Additionally the Dutch Ministry of Education has set regulations for the admission to international education in the Netherlands that also apply to this school.
